PANCHAKARMA
PANCHAKARMA, is the process of purification also known as Ayurvedic detoxification process, it is a comprehensive system of knowledge and is practiced to purify the body from accumulated doshas, malas and toxins and restore it to balance with natural sources. it is basically a bio – cleansing regimen, which facilitates the body system for better bio – availability of the healing therapies, besides achieving homeostatis of doshas. It also increases the acceptability of the body to various dietary regimens and use of rejuvenation therapy ( rasayana ) for promoting health as well as for therapeutic regimens.
As more and more people are affected by stress, either environmental, mental or physical stress, there are more complaints of diseases, diabetes, osteoporosis and cancer. All these diseases are complex disorders that accumulate over lifetime.
The most deeply seated toxins that cause disease are heavy and sticky and they easily lodge into the tissue layers. Panchakarma eliminates these toxins from the body, allowing the permanent healing of tissues, channels, digestion and mental functions.
‘Panch’ means five and ‘karma’ means actions.
Panchakarma is a combination of five therapeutic actions and they are classified as follows
- Vaman
- Virechana

Panchakarma is a three – stage process
Stage 1 – Purva Karma : Toxins are loosened from various tissues and mobilized towards the digestive system. Purva Karma begins with Abhyanga, an oil massage performed by two technicians simultaneously with synchronizing movements. During this procedure, the whole body, from head to toe, is massaged with herbal oil. Oil is also taken internally. The massage oil and oral oil help to loosen all toxins within the seven layers of tissue.
Stage 2 – Pradhan Karma: The main phase, consists of the five purification procedures, in Panchakarma, literally meaning five purification procedures.
Stage 3 – Paschat Karma: It involves restoration of strong digestive enzymes and rejuvenation of tissues. This stage is designed to nourish, strengthen, and balance the newly detoxified tissues. The aim is to establish increased energy levels, strengthen the immune system and increase longevity. This is accomplished by taking strengthening herbs after the first two stage are completed.
